The mid-July Twitter attack that say the take over of accounts belonging to high-profile figures like Elon Musk, Bill Gates, President Barak Obama and others was the work of a 17 year old teen from Tampa, FL according to the local county State Attorney.
The recent high school graduate undertook the attack by phishing an internal Twitter employee and gaining access to internal systems that allowed him to send out tweets from these accounts to perpetrate a Bitcoin cryptocurrency scheme that is reported to have netted him over $100,000.00 in little more than a day.
In announcing the arrest, the State Attorney referred to the suspect as no ordinary 17 year old. I'd say that's an understatement!
This should serve as a stark reminder for businesses of all sizes that if a technology company like Twitter can be hacked, so can any business. The days of flying under the radar and not taking the necessary steps to protect your business and your customers are over.
